Earth Day Highlight – Composting in 29 LPS Cafeterias

In partnership with several local companies, LPS cafeterias are helping the environment by composting food and container waste. As part of the sustainability efforts of the school district, composting saves around 103,000 pounds of waste per month from going into our landfill, and instead will be used to enrich soil, and create fuel and energy.

As a result of all recycling efforts during the month of March, LPS saved:

  • 933 trees
  • 225,106 kWh of energy
  • 384,328 gallons of water
  • 181 cubic yard of local landfill space
  • 3,294 lbs of air pollution
  • 22,511 gallons of fuel

LPS plans to continually add more schools as composting sites, currently projecting 6 additional sites next Fall.
