Trees

Trees play a critical and necessary role in creating a healthy and resilient environment and community by providing numerous environmental and educational benefits. Strong healthy trees all across Lincoln help fight climate change, increase local biodiversity, clean air, provide shade, and provide students with the opportunity to learn about and appreciate their natural environment.

With over 1500 trees across 66 sites, LPS encourages all students and members of local communities to learn about the benefits and importance of having healthy and thriving trees. To learn more about the climate and community benefits of trees, visit the Arbor Day Foundation website

Arbor Day Tree Planting

Started in Nebraska in 1874, Arbor Day celebrates the planting of trees and a hope for the future. At LPS, we love to see our schools celebrate through the planting of trees on their campuses and in local parks.

Planting Trees

Want to plant a tree on your school’s campus? Fill out a TMA Request!

›  Include where you want the tree to be located, any preferred species, and if you want LPS Grounds to plant the tree or someone else. A list of acceptable tree species for LPS sites can be found in the LPS Operations Design Guidelines.

TMA Requests Information and Guide

WebTMA is the Work Order system for LPS, and a TMA Alteration request is submitted so LPS Operations can investigate any changes occurring on LPS grounds. You must submit one prior to altering LPS grounds in any way, including but not limited to: starting a new garden, planting trees, or installing a fence. You do not need to submit one for gardening in existing beds or adding plants to an existing garden area. If you are unsure if you need to submit one, reach out to sustainability@lps.org. Contact your principal and executive secretary to submit a TMA Alteration request.

Tree Campus Recognition

Tree Campus Logo

‘Tree Campus K-12 is a national recognition program that helps schools bring the power of trees into the classroom and the community.’

“Schools earn recognition by meeting four core goals throughout the school year. Through hands-on learning, service projects, and campus engagement, students of all ages connect with nature and grow as environmental stewards.”

At LPS, there are five schools which have earned this prestigious recognition: Robinson, Holmes, and Kahoa Elementary schools and Lincoln Northeast and Lincoln Southeast High Schools. Read about how Kahoa and Northeast earned their recognition here!
