Brittney Wees: Sustainability Coordinator
Brittney Wees is the Sustainability Coordinator for Lincoln Public Schools. She has been in this role since 2015 and oversees a wide range of green schools initiatives including waste diversion, alternative transportation, outdoor learning, and renewable energy.
Education: B.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Environmental Studies; Masters of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Alex Tunnison: Assistant Sustainability Coordinator
Alex Tunnison has been the Assistant Sustainability Coordinator for Lincoln Public Schools since 2025. As the Assistant Sustainability Coordinator, Tunnison oversees the waste management program at LPS and supports the Green Schools Recognition Program.
Education: B.S. in Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication; Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Option from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Our Interns
Sofia Grace: Sustainability
Sofia Grace became a member of the LPS Sustainability team in August 2025. She is a pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental and sustainability studies on the biosphere and earth system studies path at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Grace is excited about the opportunity to provide young environmental stewards with valuable sustainability and environmental education resources.
“Working in sustainability has been extremely rewarding, because I not only get to learn how schools can reduce their impact on the Earth, but also how we can set an example to LPS students by demonstrating environmental stewardship.”
In her role, Grace has supported a variety of LPS events such as Walk & Bike to School, Tree Plantings, and school club meetings. She has also worked closely with sustainable initiatives in data, working with EnergyStar, the Tree Dashboard, and Eco-Schools. Grace focuses on following through on sustainable initiatives to increase resources for students across LPS.
After graduation, Grace plans to work in the sustainability field, and and is specifically interested in how to reduce and reuse textile waste.
Itai Trainin: Outreach and Engagement
Itai Trainin became a member of the LPS Sustainability team in May 2025. He is currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in political science and environmental and sustainability studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Trainin has worked on a variety of communications-based projects, including the creation of social media posts, written content, website updates, and advertising for sustainability events. He feels that the importance of his work comes through connecting students, staff and parents to sustainable efforts across LPS.
“Almost all people will interact with K-12 education at some point in their lives. Sustainability in education provides a great opportunity for making real and substantial change from the ground up!”
He is currently working on creating stronger communication between LPS clubs and a system for stronger connection to the local community in sustainable ventures. Trainin hopes to inspire action throughout schools and local communities.
After graduation, Trainin plans on pursuing a Juris Doctor (JD), with hopes to work in environmental policy and law.
Adrianna Zeljko: Gardens and Outdoor Learning
Adrianna Zeljko joined the LPS Sustainability team in May 2025. Zeljko is a senior at UNL pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a major in environmental science and minors in water science and fisheries & wildlife. Through her role, Zeljko’s goal is to support and grow sustainable practices across Lincoln Public Schools.
“I love the idea of fostering sustainability practices in the younger generation,” Zeljko said. “I think young people have lots of potential to make a difference.”
In her role as the Gardens and Outdoor Learning Intern, Zeljko supports the maintenance and establishment of gardens at LPS sites, assists with the Farm to School grant and organizes garden gatherings. Recently, Zeljko has been working to create and update maps with the locations of trees, gardens and outdoor learning spaces across LPS.
“It’s important to have a resource that people from our community can easily access to get an overview of gardens and trees at their local school,” she said.
After graduation, Zeljko hopes to work locally in the natural resources field, promoting sustainability through policy, maintenance and community.
