How to take your next event to zero waste

A zero waste event is a great opportunity to minimize the amount of waste, such as containers food or drinks come in, that is created through one game, PTO meeting, family fun night, or any other school related activity! The purpose of a zero waste event is to intentionally use items that can be reused, composted, or recycled so a limited amount of materials end up in the landfill. Below are easy steps you can follow to create a zero waste event!

  1. Coordinate with your custodian so they are aware of the type of event that is going on within the school. Your custodian will also know which composting hauler your school is partnered with who will haul the waste generated by your zero waste efforts. It is very important that whoever is planning the event is communicating with who is responsible for collection of waste materials at your school so every person who will inevitably be involved in the process has complete understanding of the event.
  2. The best thing you can do at a zero waste event is take advantage of reusable containers that generate no waste at all! If this is not possible, you can buy compostable flatware and cutlery from vendors who provide those materials such as Big Red Worms.
  3. Having an educational component to the event is important so the people attending know what to do with their waste. It is beneficial to have someone stationed at the waste bins to assist people with sorting their waste into the correct container. You can also create signs to post above each bin. Your school may have some signs available for you to borrow, or you can create your own.
  4. Share your success! Be sure to celebrate your zero waste efforts with your school and don’t forget to submit this activity for the Green Schools Recognition Program
