Wysong, Huntington earn national Recycle Bowl awards

Lincoln Public Schools received national attention this month with two elementary schools winning titles in Keep America Beautiful’s annual Recycle Bowl. Recycle Bowl is a competition hosted each fall aimed at getting students and teachers in K-12 schools excited about reducing their waste.  This year, recycling totals were tallied up over four weeks and compared among the 720 schools from across the nation who participated in Recycle Bowl. National champions are crowned in only five categories, with LPS schools claiming two of those coveted titles.

Wysong Elementary came out on top in Food Scrap Collection.  During the competition, students and staff composted an impressive 52% of trash, diverting a total of 76% of their waste through efforts in the classroom and cafeteria.  Huntington Elementary was the winner of Waste Reduction, recording a recycling diversion rate of 69%. Twelve other schools across Lincoln also participated in Recycle Bowl, using the competition as a time to celebrate living green and bolster their recycling efforts even more.
