Students at Sheridan Elementary ‘party hearty’ at school’s Earth Day celebration

Sheridan Elementary’s Green Team celebrated Earth Day with a Planting Party on April 22. Members of the team and their families, who helped recycle and compost in their classrooms and homes throughout the school year, helped weed and plant herbs and seeds in the school’s Outdoor Classroom. They also played earth-friendly games and enjoyed breakfast treats donated by parents and a local grocery and restaurant.

“Students on Sheridan’s Green Team have been just wonderful about supporting sustainability efforts at school and at home this year,” said the team’s advisor, School Librarian LaVonne Hanlon. “We’re all so proud of the part they’ve played in teaching their classmates about ways to save energy and help care for our earth. They’ve been real school leaders, and we all appreciate their efforts.”

Earlier this year, Green Team members sponsored a Green Day and Save a Tree Week to raise environmental awareness, helped make a school video about recycling, created holiday gifts from recycled materials, and made their own paper from scraps of construction paper. Their efforts were recognized at a Lincoln Public Schools Board meeting last fall.
