Lincoln Public Schools Tenure: Getting Better on Purpose
Requirements
- Probationary certificated employees must complete the following District requirements for permanent status (tenure) by December 31st of the third probationary year.
- Three years of consecutive services at .8 FTE or more on continuing contract. For service at .50 to .79, contact Human Resources for the service requirement. Employment which is less than .50 is not counted toward consecutive service.
- All K-12 teachers new to LPS must complete three required tenure courses. These course requirements may not be met with any courses offered by other institutions. (LPS Board Policy and Regulation 4340.2)
Guidelines
- Attendance
- Regular attendance is expected. There may be extenuating circumstances that require an absence. Please work with your instructors in the event that you would need to miss a class session.
- It is at the discretion of your instructor to excuse you from a class session. Please communicate with your instructor first, and contact Lindsey Roy if needed (lroy@lps.org and cc: your instructor). You will be expected to complete any missed assignments.

- Assignments
- It is expected that participants complete all the assignments by the designated due dates.
- Salary Advancement Credit
- In order to receive salary advancement, the payment for the course ($40 per credit hour) must be received before you complete the course. No refunds will be issued once payment is received. No retroactive credit will be given.

Q: When should I begin tenure requirement courses?
A: As soon as possible.
Q: How frequently are tenure requirement courses offered?
A: Tenure requirement courses are offered yearly – one class per year. There are limited or no summer offerings depending on your assignment. It is important to register for the correct class year each year. Visit the course catalog on the Professional Development website to register or seek details.
Q: Is it possible to earn salary advancement credit through completion of tenure requirement courses?
A: LPS salary advancement credit may be earned through the tenure requirement courses. Successful completion of the required tenure courses and payment of tuition for each credit hour will result in credit toward salary advancement. Payment for credit must be received no later than the last day of the scheduled course. No refunds will be given once payment is received. No retroactive credit will be approved.
