WordPress at LPS vs WordPress.com

What’s Going On?

Along with other external site hosting services like Weebly and Wix, LPS has blocked access to WordPress.com.

WordPress?! We use WordPress!

Yes. We do. We will continue to use WordPress. The important thing to know here is that WordPress is available in a couple different formats.

WordPress.org is the version of wordpress that is downloadable and installable for free on individual servers across the internet. You can’t get a website at WordPress.org. You can only obtain the software to create your own server. Any hosting service that says “we offer wordpress” is almost certainly doing it with WordPress.org. This is the version that Lincoln Public Schools runs and it is not blocked.

WordPress.com is a commercial hosted product by a company called Automattic that allows you to run a wordpress site without maintaining your own server. Similar to services like Weebly and Wix there are plans for anything from free (with ads) to annual fees that include no ads and custom domains and themes. This is the service that is being blocked.
