Keychain – Updating After Password Change

The following information applies to Mac Users who have changed their LPS password.

The first time you login to your computer after changing your LPS password you will be prompted to update your keychain.  The OSX Keychain stores usernames and passwords for you so you don’t have to remember them or type them every time your credentials are needed.  In order to protect these usernames and passwords, the keychain itself is protected with your LPS password.  When you change your LPS password, you also need to update your keychain password.

At first login you will be prompted with a message saying “The system was unable to unlock your login keychain”.

Click “Update Keychain Password“.  You will then be asked to provide a password.

At this screen you need to provide your old LPS password, not the new one you just created.  By typing your old password you let the computer know that you are allowed to access the keychain.  Once you’ve done that your keychain password will be updated to your new LPS password.

You only have to do this one time.  Once you have successfully updated your keychain you will not be prompted to do this again.
