LPS Radon Testing and Mitigation Efforts
Air Quality at LPS
LPS manages the air quality in our schools through the heating, fresh air ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC). The HVAC systems manage several factors; for example, air temperature, fresh air volume, and carbon dioxide levels. LPS has completed numerous indoor air quality projects in our older schools and applies best practices in the construction of our new schools. A well-functioning HVAC system mitigates the presence of radon gas in our schools. One element of our fresh air analysis is radon testing. LPS tests a number of schools each year.
Mitigation Steps
If radon testing within schools indicates levels at or in excess of 4 pCi/L, the following mitigation efforts are taken
- Review applicable and current drawings, specifications, photos, and other information regarding the existing building.
- Identify design information for the following:
- Foundations, footings, tunnels, crawl spaces, drainage systems, and utilities.
- HVAC systems, locations, and operational schedules.
- All other relevant building systems, including but not limited to, fire protection, HVAC, electrical service, plumbing, or other potential pollutants.
- Review floor plan diagrams with referenced design information noting suspected or confirmed significant soil, air entry points, or potential locations for such contamination.
- Conduct a visual inspection to help identify any specific building characteristics, hazards, and configurations that may affect the design, installation, and effectiveness of existing systems.
- Take investigative or mitigation actions as necessary to bring facility in accordance with design standards.
- Our team seeks to solve the condition within the building that is allowing radon gas into the building or is not sufficiently ventilating the building to control the radon levels.
School Testing Dates
Here you will find a listing of the year radon testing occurred in each school. In every circumstance of a reading at or above 4.0 pCi/L our team seeks to find the cause and makes necessary modifications. Our team continues with mitigation efforts until retesting confirms the radon levels are below 4.0 pCi/L.
