Grades K-5 Overview

Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade at Lincoln Public Schools receive age-appropriate instruction designed to support prosocial skill development. These student development lessons are designed to build the social, emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal skills that support a strong foundation and for successful careers, lifelong learning, and civic engagement. The student development lessons are:

Student Development Lessons are grouped into three core areas:

Skills for Responsible Learning

  • Gain and gives attention positively
  • Follows rules and expectations in all areas of school
  • Utilizes organizational skills
  • Demonstrates active listening skills
  • Completes in-class and in-school work

Skills for Respectful Relationships

  • Cooperates with adults
  • Collaborates with peers
  • Asks for help when needed
  • Demonstrates respect for others and self

Skills for Safe Problem Solving

  • Expresses feelings and ideas in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • Uses strategies to manage emotions
  • Demonstrates developmentally appropriate responses when adult decisions are made

These foundational skills are embedded into daily instruction and support each student’s personal growth, classroom success, and positive connection to their learning environment.

Bully Prevention Unit

During the Bullying Prevention unit, your child will learn specific skills to help prevent and stop bullying.

Your child will learn how to:

  • Recognize when bullying is happening
  • Report bullying to a caring adult
  • Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others
  • Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying

These lessons are taught to students in grades K–5 during Unit Studies Health Education instruction in the first quarter.

Child Protection Unit

In the Child Protection unit, students will learn specific skills to help keep them safe.

Your child will learn how to:

  • Recognize ways to stay safe
  • Ask for permission from adults before doing certain tasks
  • Identify safe and unsafe touches on their body
  • Speak up when they feel unsafe

These lessons are taught to students in PreK through Grade 1 during the second quarter as part of Unit Studies Health Education instruction.
