WYS – Sally G. Wysong Elementary

Sally G. Wysong Elementary

Wysong is an 80,000-square foot elementary school building built at a cost of $20 million, paid for by a bond issue passed by Lincoln voters in 2014 under the guidance of Superintendent Steve Joel. The need for a new elementary and middle school was demanded by rapid growth in the 2010s at the edge of Lincoln near 84th/Yankee Hill that turned corn fields into subdivisions of houses and businesses.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Wysong was May 8, 2015, with the building’s first day for students arriving on August 14th, 2016. Wysong was the district’s 39th elementary school, and 56th school overall. At the time of opening the building was led by Principal Randy Oltman.

Wysong elementary is named for Sally G. Wysong, a long-time early childhood advocate in Lincoln who ran the Meadowlane Nursery School, and later served on the Lincoln Board of Education. Their mascot are the “Wolves.”

The building features natural light and small group gathering spaces with access to the outdoor areas. This was the first new elementary school to open after the LPS Technology Plan provisioned for a device (Chromebook) per student, so the cabinetry in  classrooms included storage lockers to accommodate this new era in education. It was also the first school in Lincoln designed to have the gymnasium and offices for before & after school care staff located where parents can have easier drop-off and pick-up service.
