Jazz Band
Lincoln High School has three jazz ensembles that students may participate in. The LHS Big Band, Prep Jazz Band, and Jazz Combo. These groups focus on the various styles and history of jazz music. Through ensemble rehearsals, students will delve into various jazz styles, techniques, and improvisation, honing their skills as versatile performers.
LHS Big Band is composed of students who have successfully auditioned as well as need based instrumentation. Students MUST audition each year in order to remain in the ensemble. Prior enrollment does not guarantee that you will be selected again. Instruments for this ensemble include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, drums, guitar, and upright/electric bass. This group meets during the school year during 1st period and will perform at least four concerts as well as one festival. Students in this ensemble are highly encouraged to participate in private lessons throughout the year.
Prep Jazz Band is a CLC sponsored club that meets after school from 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm. This group is open to instrumentalists who have completed an audition but were not selected for the Varsity Jazz Band. Students wanting to participate in this group will need to have a level of proficiency on their chosen instrument. If there are not enough students participating to have a functional band, this ensemble may be dismissed for a semester.
LHS Jazz Combo is made up of students in the LHS Big Band who wish to focus on improvisation and combo styled performance opportunities.
Audition Information
*Students wishing to audition for the upcoming school year should contact Mr. Burk sburk@lps.org to arrange an audition. After the first day of a semester, auditions are closed.

Trumpets, Saxophones, Trombones (Stylistic examples available)
Perform the concert F and Ab major scales
Perform the chromatic scale (1 octave minimum, 2 octaves preferred)
Download and prepare the required audition music found here
Using the accompaniment track, play along to the recording using the required audition music and then improvise for twelve bars to the Bb blues
Piano, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar
Perform the concert F and Ab major scales
Perform the chromatic scale (1 octave minimum, 2 octaves preferred)

Using the accompaniment track found here, play three choruses: one using the audition music, one comping (walking in the case of bass), and one improvising.
Drumset
Open the styles sheet and prepare the following styles: rock, swing, bossa nova, samba (video lessons available)
Play each of the styles in the following format: 7 measures of groove, one measure of fill. Do this twice for a total of 16 measures
