ESU 18 Distance Learning

What Does Distance Learning Mean?

Distance Learning can mean a lot of things, and can benefit students and teachers in many ways. Here are just a few:

  • Extend the classroom—Through video conference solutions, it is our hope that we will offer a few courses to students in other districts across the state. It also means that if a course doesn’t have quite enough enrollment at one high school in our district, students from another high school can join the class remotely, along with the possibility of several students from other districts. Distance courses will keep the course selection at LPS varied and solid.
  • Enrichment activities—With video conferencing equipment, individual teachers or schools can bring experts into the classroom to enrich the learning experience for students. Virtual Field trips are available to zoos, museums, or other non-profits.

How do we connect teachers and students with distance learning opportunities?

NVIS (The Nebraska Virtual Instruction Source) is a statewide clearinghouse for both distance learning course offerings and Nebraska-based virtual field trip experiences. The majority of these opportunities leverage videoconferencing to connect students with teachers, professionals, experiences, the arts, and Nebraska history in a cost-effective and time-efficient way.

Most of them are delivered through 2-way interactive videoconferencing (Zoom), but some are online courses.

Some courses may require a small tuition fee.

To see what courses are being offered statewide through distance learning from the Lincoln Public Schools, at the NVIS site, click Course Offerings and type “Lincoln” in the search field.

Your LPS Counselor will help you determine if a distance learning course is right for you during the LPS school day.
