School Counselors
Purpose of Our Program
School counselors are professional school advocates who provide support to maximize student potential and academic achievement. Lincoln Public Schools School Counselors support the Lincoln Public Schools Mission to prepare ALL students for successful careers, lifelong learning, and civic engagement by working with students in the areas of academic support/planning, post-secondary and career exploration, and development of prosocial skills which are behaviors that benefit others and promote positive social interactions.

LPS School Counselors work alongside school administrators, teachers and families to support students by:
- Teaching classroom lessons on prosocial and academic skills and career development
- Collaborating on development and implementation of schoolwide programming
- Facilitating small group counseling sessions
- Supporting individual student with short-term (brief) counseling
- Understanding student physical and emotional development
- Identifying barriers that impact schoolwork and attendance
- Partnering with School Social Workers on referrals to community partners
School counselors provide proactive lessons throughout the school year on the following topics:

- Problem-Solving
- Healthy Coping Skills
- Safety/Personal Advocacy
- Academic and Post-Secondary Planning

LPS School Counseling Mission Statement
The mission of the LPS school counseling program is to provide a comprehensive, developmentally-appropriate program with curriculum for each student from kindergarten through graduation that is proactive, preventative, collaborative, and focuses on each student’s academic, social-emotional, and career development. All LPS school counseling programs are led by a professional school counselor and will:
- Align with the Nebraska Department of Education and ASCA National Model;
- Promote systemic change to ensure equitable access for each student;
- Identify each student’s individual strengths to maximize their potential for growth.
