108B LB1193 LPS Testimony

Dear Education Committee:

LB1193 rightly engages the parent in the decision of whether their child should be promoted to the next grade. It does not require that a student being served through an Individual Education Program should have that decision considered and approved by the IEP team that has been working with the student and parent.

Additionally, the bill treats high school grades similarly to elementary school grades regarding retention. High school students progress through course credit accumulation, not through the completion of “grades.” Using the “grade” retention system as described in LB1193 may inadvertently result in students repeating coursework for which they have already earned credit.
