108B LB1399 LPS Testimony

Dear Education Committee:

I am writing in opposition to LB1399. First, a similar bill to engage parents in schools, LB71, is currently on General File. LB71 would be a better bill to carry forward this discussion as it has the support of the Education Committee. Second, LB1399 has some technical difficulties that could seriously interfere with the performance of the Board. For instance, in Sec. 6(3), the bill establishes the ability of parents to have five minutes at a board meeting to read a passage from a district book. No restrictions on the number of times individual parents can read at a meeting or subsequent meetings. LB71 would appear to be a better bill to move forward with this discussion.
