Karen Covil: National Science Teaching Association Robert E. Yager Exemplary Teaching Award

Background

Lincoln North Star High School science teacher Karen Covil was one of six teachers nationally to win the Robert E. Yager Exemplary Teaching Award from the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA). The organization recognizes educators who have showcased excellent and innovative approaches to the field of science education.

Explanation

Karen Covil has taught at North Star since 2012. She has taught biology, geoscience, physical science, chemistry and physics classes.

A national award, Karen was one of six teachers to win the Robert E. Yager Exemplary Teaching Award from the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA). The organization recognizes educators who have showcased excellent and innovative approaches to the field of science education.

Karen goes above and beyond to engage, challenge and empower the next generation of scientific thinkers. She has demonstrated her ability to motivate and challenge students, exhibit effective planning and presentation skills and display a deep knowledge of science through publications and presentations.

Proposal

That the Lincoln Board of Education adopt the following resolution:

WHEREAS, Karen Covil was recently awarded the Robert E. Yager Exemplary Teaching Award from the National Science Teaching Association; and

WHEREAS, Karen Covil has a gift for helping students see how science connects to their daily lives; and

WHEREAS, Karen Covil engages, challenges and empowers the next generation of scientific thinkers; and

WHEREAS, Karen Covil uses her research and teaching background to share her science knowledge across the United States through articles and presentations; and

WHEREAS, Karen Covil is valued, respected and admired among her colleagues, not only at Lincoln Public Schools, but also across the state of Nebraska and the United States;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Lincoln Board of Education does hereby congratulate Karen Covil for winning the Robert E. Yager Exemplary Teaching Award from the National Science Teaching Association.
