Mattie Trejo-Amen: Nebraska School Counselor Association Elementary School Counselor of the Year

Background

Mattie Trejo-Amen has been an elementary counselor at Lincoln Public Schools for six years. She was recently awarded the Elementary School Counselor of the Year Award by the Nebraska School Counselor Association.

Explanation

The Nebraska School Counselor Association recently named Humann Elementary School counselor Mattie Trejo-Amen the 2025 Nebraska Elementary School Counselor of the Year. The award recognizes school counselors who demonstrate excellence in their profession.

In Mattie’s role, she teaches citizenship and prosocial lessons in every classroom at Humann, grades kindergarten through fifth grade. These activities and lessons focus on being safe, respectful, and kind. Mattie also supports all students in helping them develop social-emotional skills like how to build relationships and problem-solving.

Prior to becoming a school counselor, Mattie was an elementary school teacher.

When speaking about her work, Mattie said:

“I love teaching reading, writing and math, but I love getting to help contribute to developing people and teaching people how to be good people. We have a part in helping little people become the best version of themselves, and that is the coolest thing ever.”

Proposal

That the Lincoln Board of Education adopt the following resolution:  

WHEREAS, Mattie Trejo-Amen, counselor at Humann Elementary School has been named 2025 Elementary School Counselor of the Year by the Nebraska School Counselor Association; and 

WHEREAS, Mattie Trejo-Amen successfully cultivates and nurtures student wellbeing and outcomes by teaching important social-emotional learning skills; and 

WHEREAS, Mattie Trejo-Amen works collaboratively with the educators at Humann to address student needs ensuring their success; and

WHEREAS, Mattie Trejo-Amen is widely admired and respected among her peers both within Lincoln Public Schools and the State of Nebraska; 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Lincoln Board of Education does hereby congratulate Mattie Trejo-Amen for being named the Nebraska Elementary School Counselor of the Year by the Nebraska School Counselor Association.
