The type of AI that people are most interested in lately is \u201c<i><b>generative AI<\/b><\/i>\u201d. These are tools that create new original content at our request, from natural language (prompts) we provide.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-3f53ac9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3f53ac9\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-795c013\" data-id=\"795c013\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0cf0aa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0cf0aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are a number of areas in which education may see long term benefits when using AI-enhanced approaches to existing priorities.\u00a0Supporting students with disabilities, addressing variability in student learning, enabling English language learners in the traditional classroom, or adaptive feedback loops that increase the quality and quantity of feedback provided to students and teachers are a few examples.<\/p><p>AI will never replace good teachers. Educators have the opportunity to use AI-enabled tools to amplify their role in the learning process, enabling them to engage and support their students at even higher levels. It can also help reduce the burden of \u201coff-stage\u201d activities like grading, analyzing data, crafting professional communications, and more.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-37778e6\" data-id=\"37778e6\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5bc8430 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5bc8430\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These days there is a lot of AI hype out there, with companies pushing &#8220;magical thinking machines&#8221; and overpromising time savings and results. Every month our existing tools update with more AI enabled features, whether we ask for them or not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At LPS, we want to take a measured and responsible approach to the integration of AI tools into our work. Any tool used by LPS staff must meet our <a href=\"https:\/\/home.lps.org\/technology\/inst_tech_tools_in_lps\/\"><b>requirements for security, data governance, manageability and integration<\/b><\/a> with our current workflows.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be doing controlled deployments of these tools over time and you can choose to use them if you think they&#8217;ll help you with your work. Prompts and responses generated here are covered by the same <a href=\"https:\/\/workspace.google.com\/intl\/en\/terms\/education_terms\/\">privacy guarantees<\/a> as Gmail, Drive, Docs, and the other Google Workspace tools used by LPS, in\u00a0compliance with FERPA, and BoE Policy on data privacy. If you prompt a Gen AI tool with the same question five times you will get five unique answers that may contradict.\u00a0<\/li><li>Generative AI tools <b>are not human!<\/b>\u00a0They are statistical reasoning engines that generate sentences that sound human. Because of this they will confidently provide you text that sounds true, but is not accurate. The tool is unable to determine whether the words they present you are true or false. Teachers and staff should be mindful of this, and adhere to these commitments we have to students and families before using an AI tool in our work, or with students.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/policy\/gen\/guid\/fpco\/ferpa\/index.html\"><b>FERPA<\/b><\/a> &#8211; Any AI systems used by LPS employees must protect the privacy of student education records. Most publically available AI tools do not have the level of security and privacy policy in place to assure that student data remains protected. If LPS staff choose to use AI in support of their role and practices, they should ensure that no personally identifiable information is ever included in AI prompts.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/legal-library\/browse\/rules\/childrens-online-privacy-protection-rule-coppa\"><b>COPPA<\/b><\/a> &#8211; Like all websites that require a login or collect personal information, AI tools require parental consent when used with students under the age of 13. Tools that are approved for use in LPS have gained this consent. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lps.org\/apps\/matrix\/browse.cfm\">Check the Matrix<\/a> to see if a tool is approved for use with students.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.ed.gov\/idea\/\"><b>IDEA<\/b><\/a> &#8211; AI must not be used in a way that denies disabled students equal access to education opportunities.\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/consumers\/guides\/childrens-internet-protection-act#:~:text=The%20Children's%20Internet%20Protection%20Act,harmful%20content%20over%20the%20Internet.\"><b>CIPA<\/b><\/a> &#8211; Schools must ensure that AI use aligns with CIPA protections against harmful content.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/ocr\/civilrights\/resources\/factsheets\/504.pdf\"><b>Section 504<\/b><\/a> (of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973) applies to both physical and digital environments. Refer to previous artifacts of their learning for comparison.<\/li>\n<li>If the work was done in a Google Doc, Sheet, or Slide document, check the version history. You should be able to see the progression of the text from word-to-word, and any editing that happens along the way. If the text suddenly appears all at once in the history of the document, it may have been pasted from another source.<\/li>\n<li>If you choose to use \u201cAI detectors,\u201d use multiple. No single tool can tell you with 100% accuracy whether or not a student has used AI to generate text used in an assignment. You should be aware that current AI detectors are known to indicate false positives at a high rate and have shown bias. That being known, if you consult a few of them it may help you create an informed opinion about whether text is more likely to be authentic or more likely to have been AI generated.<\/li><li>Also note that AI text generators can easily hallucinate a well formatted citation which does not actually connect to anything in the real world. Having students produce the cited document(s) could help them understand this.&nbsp;<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your investigation leads you to believe that a student may have violated expectations, prepare any relevant documentation and share it with the student and family to inquire about the discrepancy and your concerns. Consider asking the student to resubmit an alternate or revised version of the work, or summarize their main points with pencil &amp; paper in your presence.
