Elsener has been an art teacher at Arts and Humanities since 2018 and took on the role of Sustainability Champion in August 2025. Throughout the 2025-26 school year, she has shown that sustainability is not a solo project, but a community effort built on communication, forward thinking, and a willingness to ask questions.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6170875 elementor-section-full_width elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6170875\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-b29b049\" data-id=\"b29b049\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a981eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9a981eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art and sustainability, it turns out, are a natural pairing. Elsener credits the experimental nature of art for creating an openness to sustainable practices and reuse. When students are already accustomed to asking \u201cwhat can I do with this?\u201d, it becomes easier to ask \u201chow can I use this responsibly?\u201d This overlap has allowed Elsener to weave sustainability into her curriculum in ways that feel organic rather than obligatory.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0b48384 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0b48384\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsener recently attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.lps.org\/sustainability\/2026\/04\/01\/4th-annual-s-o-s-summit-recap\/\">Students of Sustainability Summit<\/a> to present\u00a0 \u201cThe Ethical Maker: Adornment as a Sustainable Practice,\u201d&#8211;a collection of student jewelry projects made from recycled materials. The project asked students to reevaluate their idea of \u201cwaste,\u201d shifting their view of it not as an end point, but as a raw material. She has spoken about the many ways unconventional and donated materials can be incorporated into student artwork, and how reuse is not a limitation but an invitation to test new ideas.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When you&#8217;re creating artwork, there&#8217;s a lot of experimentation.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-01ba690 elementor-section-full_width elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"01ba690\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-56393b6\" data-id=\"56393b6\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-172f08c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"172f08c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond individual projects, Elsener has been promoting sustainability across Arts and Humanities in many practical ways. In 2025, the school upgraded to schoolwide composting, and since then she has introduced waste-saving measures including paper towel waste decals, marker recycling, and hard-to-recycle plastics collection. Donated supplies and the use of recycled materials allow students to work with a wide variety of materials without producing unnecessary waste.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has stood out most, however, is how quickly students have embraced these changes. Elsener found that they were excited to be involved in the recycling process and have been making more efforts to be sustainable as a result.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents ask more questions like \u2018is this recyclable?\u2019 \u2018Is this compostable?\u2019 \u2018Can this go in the marker bin?\u2019 They\u2019re trying to ask each other and be more vocal about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shift in student behavior points to something bigger: sustainability at Arts and Humanities has become a community effort. Students are already passionate about reducing their environmental impact and have taken on an active role in keeping each other accountable.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents have always been really great advocates for making posters to make sure people are recycling correctly.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsener hopes students will carry these practices into their future art projects, and she encourages other teachers and staff to promote sustainability in their own classrooms. Central to her message is the idea that you do not need to have all the answers.
