LPS encourages students and staff to bike or walk to school as a way to reduce traffic related pollution. Each building is supplied with bike racks to accommodate bike commuters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Safety is, of course, a priority and a great way to establish those safe routes to school is a <\/span>walking school bus<\/span><\/span><\/a>. These efforts eliminate the need for vehicle transportation which saves energy and reduces emissions. <\/span>Schools are also encouraged to coordinate participation in Walk to School Day\u00a0in the fall and Bike to School Day in the spring.<\/p>

LPS operates over 165 buses (yellow fleet) and nearly 150 white fleet vehicles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2024, LPS received $815,000 through the Environmental Protection Agency Clean School Bus Rebate Program<\/a> to replace older school buses with three fully electric buses. Removing old diesel engines from our roads and replacing them with fully electric vehicles helps protect the health of our students. The 2025-2026 school year will be the first year the electric school buses will be in full use, so if you see them, make sure to give them a wave!<\/span><\/p>

The electric school buses follow a growing trend of electric vehicle use at LPS. In 2023, the district purchased its first electric vehicle, the\u00a0<\/span>Chevy Bolt EUV. The Chevy Bolt EUV and the electric buses are part of the ongoing effort to reduce vehicle emissions and contribute to a more sustainable transportation system.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

If you are using a vehicle to get to or from school, there are still ways to help reduce our impact on the environment. Anyone dropping off or picking up students is encouraged to minimize time idling in front of buildings. The <\/span>EPA Idle-Free Schools Toolkit<\/span><\/span><\/a> is an excellent resource for learning more about reducing air toxins and engaging students, staff, and families with these efforts. Thanks to grant funding from Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy and Lincoln Electric System, seven electric vehicle (EV) charging stations were installed at LPS sites in 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As of 2025, 10 district sites host charging stations available to support electric vehicle (EV) use for anyone in the Lincoln community. EVs provide economic and environmental benefits like decreasing harmful greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation.<\/span><\/p>

The LPS EV charging stations are connected to an online dashboard that tracks station use and quantifies environmental impacts. Since the first installations, over 56,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided. That’s like planting 1,454 trees and letting them grow for 10 years! In 2024, over 2,200 charging sessions occurred at LPS stations. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

You don\u2019t have to own your bike to enjoy <\/u>cycling around the city. BikeLNK<\/span><\/a> provides a bicycle rental service with many convenient locations in the heart of Lincoln. Lincoln also has a fantastic trails system available for anyone staying off the roads.\u00a0<\/p>

Public transportation is another great way to reduce our emissions. The City of Lincoln <\/span>StarTran<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Bus Service has several <\/span>Electric Buses<\/span><\/span><\/a> currently in service.
