Dawes Middle School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Called Benton Street School (K-3) until the Dawes building was finished, a full elementary and junior high functioned in this combination school until 1991 when its focus was narrowed to grades 6-9.<\/p>\n<p>The school was named for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_G._Dawes\">General Charles G. Dawes<\/a> (1865- 1951), a Lincoln resident from 1887 to 1894 who later served in a number of important federal positions. He originated the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dawes_Plan\">Dawes Plan<\/a>, a program designed to help Germany pay its World War I reparations. Dawes shared the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize for his plan. Dawes was also vice president of the United States under President Coolidge, and ambassador to Great Britain. In 1932 Mr. Dawes left government service and spent the rest of his life as chairman of the City National Bank of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Citing waning enrollment, the LPS Board of Education closed Dawes Middle School in 2009, and the building housed the students and staff of <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.lps.org\/pedia\/g\/goo-goodrich-at-dawes-middle-school\/\">Goodrich Middle School<\/a>\u00a0while their building underwent renovation.\u00a0In 2011 Dawes Middle School reopened.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOCATION: 5130 Colfax Website OPERATION: 1955-1957: 49th &amp; Benton 1957-2009: General Charles G.
