It is used to increase skills and broaden interests and opportunities.<\/p><h3 class=\"p1\">Materials:<\/h3><ul><li class=\"p1\">Materials needed will vary.<\/li><\/ul><p><a href=\"http:\/\/home.lps.org\/pbis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-06-at-10.51.42-AM.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1327\" src=\"http:\/\/home.lps.org\/pbis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-06-at-10.51.42-AM-300x239.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-11-06 at 10.51.42 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/home.lps.org\/mtssb\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-06-at-10.51.42-AM-300x239.png 300w, https:\/\/home.lps.org\/mtssb\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-06-at-10.51.42-AM.png 723w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p><h3>How and When to Implement:<\/h3><ul><li class=\"p1\">When you want to increase a behavior or skills<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Consider doing a task analysis to identify the different steps involved in a task where a\u00a0student can receive reinforcement<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Identify reinforcers that the student is motivated to earn<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Make it clear what the student has to do to earn the reinforcer<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Teaching staff who are dispensing reinforcers need to be able to observe\/measure the\u00a0behavior<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Make it clear how long the student has to engage in observable\/measurable expected\u00a0behavior<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Identify whether the student needs a reward immediately after he\/she engages in an\u00a0expected behavior (first\/then) or if the student will be successful with a delayed\u00a0gratification system (token system)<\/li><li class=\"p1\">When dispensing reinforcers use specific praise (e.g. You\u2019re following directions, You\u2019re\u00a0completing your work, You\u2019re being safe)<\/li><\/ul><h3>Things to Consider\/Problem Solving:<\/h3><ul><li class=\"p1\">A reinforcement schedule could be completed by the student\u2019s family to help determine\u00a0interests and likes.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Assessing what the student likes and then creating reinforcers based upon interests can\u00a0create reinforcers.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Giving students choices can be effective in the development of the reinforcement. \u00a0Simply\u00a0giving a student a choice of which of two toys he would like to play with can have the\u00a0effect of making the selected toy as a reinforcer.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">Giving free access to potential reinforcers can also create new reinforcers.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">The &#8220;packaging&#8221; of the reinforcer is another strategy to develop reinforcers. Often you\u00a0can &#8220;sell&#8221; the reinforcer by being enthusiastic and playful.<\/li><li class=\"p1\">What is reinforcing to a student will change over time.
