On Thursday, September 19, Maxey 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students and staff had an opportunity to meet author/illustrator Matt Tavares. He was visiting Nebraska for the Plum Creek Literacy Festival in Seward, NE at Concordia College. He is a huge baseball fan and has written and illustrated several books about baseball players as well as other biographies. He has worked on fiction as well as nonfiction projects including Red and Lulu, about a pair of cardinals living in a tree that has been placed at Rockefeller Center for the holidays. His new book, Dasher, released September 12, is about Santa’s reindeer, and how she came to live at the North Pole. His presentation at Maxey included describing his process for writing, illustrating, and researching his topics to make sure all illustrations and text are authentic and true. The students and staff were enchanted! Matt’s books were on display in the Maxey entry hallway during the 25th Anniversary celebration on Sunday, September 29 from 1-2:30 p.m., and are now available for student checkout. Matt autographed all of the Maxey library copies of his books!
