Homework\/Independent Practice<\/span><\/a><\/div><\/div>

The Lincoln Public Schools elementary mathematics program is matched to the Nebraska State Math Standards. Grade level content has been designed to ensure students have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills outlined in the 2022 Nebraska College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics.<\/p>\n

Why do students have math homework\/independent practice?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Homework\/Independent Practice is an opportunity for students to homewokr\/independently practice the concepts they are learning in math class.<\/p>\n

How often will students have math homework\/independent practice?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In Kindergarten, students will begin to have math homework\/independent practice on a regular basis, but not necessarily every night.
\nStudents in 1st \u2013 5th grade will have math homework\/independent practice to do almost every night.<\/p>\n

How can families\/guardians help with homework\/independent practice?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Decide on a consistent place and time for students to work on their homework\/independent practice \u2013 help build a habit.
\nProvide encouragement, but don\u2019t take over. It is important that teachers see the student\u2019s thinking (even mistakes) on the assigned page(s). Seeing where students have confusion helps the teacher make decisions about instruction.<\/p>\n

How much time should students spend on math homework\/independent practice each night?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

K-2: 15-20 minutes
\n3-5: 20-30 minutes<\/p>\n

What if it is taking a lot longer than that?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

If a student hasn\u2019t finished their math homework\/independent practice even after working diligently for more than 20-30 minutes, have them stop. Write a quick note to let the teacher know that they were unable to finish in the allotted time, and have the student turn in what they were able to get through.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
