The Health Science courses are designed to combine classroom learning with hands-on clinical lab experiences. Students will learn about careers that promote health, wellness, and diagnosis as well as the treatment of injuries and disease. These courses provide students with the opportunity to earn credentials in CPR and First Aid as well as to learn the fundamentals of medical terminology that are used in a wide array of health science careers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Intro. To Health Science (9145)<\/h3>

Introduction to Health Science is designed to give an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, support services, biotechnology and research and health informatics pathways. The course focuses on health careers, exploration, leadership development, medical terminology, ethical and legal responsibilities, the history of health care and the economics of health care. Throughout the course students have the opportunity to become certified in CPR and First Aid.<\/p>

Medical Terminology (9143)<\/h3>

The course prepares students to be able to learn the medical language by analyzing their components. The primary focus is on developing both oral and written skills in the language used to communicate within health care professionals.<\/p>

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) (9149) – Dual Credit Course Taught at SCC<\/h3>

This is a dual-credit class taught by a Registered Nurse from Southeast Community College (SCC) and enables students to earn their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credentials. Students will learn basic patient care needed to work as a CNA in health care facilities as well as private home placements. This course will be taught at SCC and will meet three days a week. Students taking this course are strongly encouraged to register for Procedures in Phlebotomy (Course Number: 9162 ), which will be held one day a week at SCC. After registration, students will receive a packet of information and an application form. Selections are made in the spring and waiting lists are maintained once the courses are full. Prerequisites include one or more of the following courses: Intro to Health Science, Medical Terminology, or Anatomy\/Physiology. Please check with the high school counseling center for more information.<\/p>

Procedures in Phlebotomy (9162) – Dual Credit Course Taught at SCC<\/h3>

This is a dual-credit class taught by a Southeast Community College (SCC) instructor that will introduce students to the principles and skills needed to safely perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection. Quality assurance procedures pertaining to collection and transport of specimens, laboratory safety, ethical and legal issues pertaining to phlebotomy, and anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system will be taught. This course will be held one day a week at SCC. Students taking this course are strongly encouraged to register for Certified Nursing Assistant (Course Number: 9149), which will be held three days a week at SCC.
