Depending on the situation, a teacher may decide to establish a public or private line of conversation with a student or multiple students. Outlined below are detailed steps to communicate with students through each route.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-38b8761 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"38b8761\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6d651ec\" data-id=\"6d651ec\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78a99e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"78a99e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Public Questions via Announcements<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c84509b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c84509b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><i>What are Google Classroom Announcements?<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Announcements feature in Google Classroom is a great way to cultivate dialogue among students. You can use it to not only post important updates, but also to field questions from students that will be visible to the entire class.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Announcements are found on the homepage of each Google Classroom course, as is the field to post a new announcement. Before beginning, ensure that your students have permission to post and comment to the Announcements board. To do this:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click the tool icon in the upper right-hand corner of the course page. This will take you to the Settings page<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> section, find the option for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stream<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in the associated drop-down menu, ensure that the option, \u201cStudents can post and comment,\u201d is selected. This option is the default in a new course; however, there are situations where teachers have turned off posting and commenting features for students.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong><i>Posting to Announcements and Replying to Students<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To post a question, comment, or announcement to which students can respond, enter your message in the open text field near the top of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streams<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tab of your course page. There is a drop down menu to select which course(s) you would like to post the announcement to, as well as a menu to select which students see the message. By default, the announcement will be posted to the course that you are currently in, and be visible to all students in the course, but you may also identify additional courses to broadcast the post. If you need to attach files to your announcement, select the paperclip icon at the bottom-left corner of the announcement field and choose from the options of posting a link, file, document from your Google Drive, or a YouTube video. You may include more than one attachment in any one announcement.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To respond to a student\u2019s post in an announcement thread, click the curved arrow icon to the right of their comment. Google Classroom will automatically insert a tag for that student in the reply field. You may add additional students to the reply by typing \u201c+\u201d followed by their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">username@class.lps.org<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> email address. Follow the tag(s) with your reply and click the \u201cpaper plane\u201d icon to post.<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Order of Announcements<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By default, the list of announcements is in chronological order, with the most recent original post appearing at the top. If the teacher edits an announcement (by clicking the option button to the right of the post, then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the revised post will then appear at the top of the order. Besides editing an announcement, the teacher may also change the order of the posts by pushing a particular announcement to the top. To do this, select the \u201coptions\u201d icon (three vertical dots) to the right of the post you would like to move, then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Move to Top<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a9f0bc7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a9f0bc7\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-05b2db4\" data-id=\"05b2db4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15c6b77 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"15c6b77\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Private Questions via Email<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67eab2e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67eab2e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Messaging via Google Classroom is a convenient way for students and teachers to communicate outside of the more public Announcements page. To access this feature, click the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tab at the top of the page. Here, you should find all your students listed in alphabetical order by last name. You may choose to email a particular student by selecting the options button (three vertical dots) to the right of their name, and then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email Student<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You may also decide to message multiple students at once by checking the boxes to the left of their names, clicking <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A simple way of contacting the entire class at once is to choose the check box just above the list of students, then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Email<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students will have the same option to email you directly from Google Classroom. They cannot, however, email their classmates from the course.
