Thank you! End of the year message

LPS Staff,

Thank you! This school year may not have gone as we envisioned back in August, but it is a shining example of the amazing teamwork and collaboration going on every day in our schools and across the school district. We emerged stronger together and are ready to navigate the road ahead – no matter the obstacles.

Thank you for wrapping around our students and meeting their needs – academically, emotionally and physically. You have demonstrated once again the power of public education and that ALL truly means ALL.

Please take a moment and watch this special gratitude video from the Board of Education to all of you.

Next school year

We know there are many questions, rumors and stories circulating about the opening of school in August. Lincoln Public Schools has begun their work on drafting plans and at this point no final decisions have been made for next fall. We learned many lessons during the fourth quarter. That along with the new information and recommendations coming out everyday from national and local health officials will help guide our next steps:

  • We will continue to work closely with state and local officials (Governor, Mayor, Health Department, NDE, etc.) to determine best practices.
  • A steering committee, with many sub-committees involving every department, will be working as quickly and thoroughly as possible to gather input and create options and plans based on the different levels of risk.
  • Plans for next fall will be communicated with you and our community by the end of June. All plans will be subject to health directives in place at the start of the school year.
  • We will provide regular updates once we have further direction and plans are in motion.

We understand this time of uncertainty creates anxiety and does not allow you to fully plan for how this will impact you and your family. We wish we had all the answers right now, but that is not possible with so much information changing rapidly. We will base our decisions on the priority of safety for our students and staff. We need your help to dispel any rumors and speculation. Again, no decisions have been made at this time and we are exploring all options.

Spread the word: Celebrate Lincoln’s Class of 2020 on May 24 at 8:20 p.m.

We are asking for the community’s help in honoring and celebrating this year’s graduating class. On Sunday, May 24, at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time), we encourage everyone in Lincoln to step outside or open their windows to cheer this year’s seniors on what would have been the regularly scheduled graduation day for approximately 3,000 students. High school seniors will then be able to walk into their neighborhoods wearing their caps and gowns and hear the celebrations across the city.

Families and graduating seniors can share photos and videos of their neighborhood celebrations with Lincoln Public Schools to be displayed on a special website. Join the conversation and watch the event unfold on our special webpage:

Thank you for your help in celebrating the Class of 2020!
