Sen. Rita Sanders Chairman Murman
and members of the Education Committee:

The Lincoln Public Schools opposes LB 1024 that seeks to ensure the history of communism is included within the state’s social studies curriculum. We agree that the history of communism must be included with the study of world and American history but do not support the move to add this to statute.

The Lincoln Public Schools curriculum guides for 10th Grade World History and 11th Grade US History both address communism as part of instruction/curriculum, so, this bill is not necessary. World History and US History are REQUIRED for graduation at LPS!

The Lincoln Public Schools believes that curriculum and standards decisions are best made at the Nebraska Department of Education and ultimately as a local curriculum decision. A move to have curricular lessons and topics in statute seems unnecessary.

For the above stated reasons, Lincoln Public Schools is opposed to LB 1024 and request that you do not advance this bill.

Brad Jacobsen
Associate Superintendent Lincoln Public Schools
