Chairman Murman and members of the Education Committee:

The Lincoln Public Schools supports Senator Dungan and the concept behind LB 1039. We did bring our concern that we wanted to be certain that there was no murkiness created for our SRO partners and the Senator is very willing to bring an amendment to meet that concern.

LPS, the City of Lincoln, and the Lincoln Police Department through the Safe and Successful Kids Initiative efforts have an MOU that aligns with current statute to govern our incredible SRO program in our 6-12 buildings.

We fully believe and support that student discipline is handled by the school, and law violations are to be handled by law enforcement.

The bill and future amendment offer additional clarity and does not impact roles of the school or law enforcement.

Sincerely,

Brad Jacobsen
Associate Superintendent of Civic Engagement
Lincoln Public Schools
