Statement on Pending Legislative Proposals During the Special Session

• LPS has no position on any plan that we have not had the opportunity to carefully examine and scrutinize as to its potential impact on Lincoln Public Schools. A significant part of that process includes reviewing actual draft legislation and, for any funding impacts, the need to see transparent multi-year modeling to accurately determine projected impacts. 
• LPS prizes local control as a fundamentally important and longstanding principle of effective school district governance and leadership. 
• LPS is not opposed in principle to property tax relief. Any property tax relief plan that impacts K-12 funding must include safeguards to assure sustainability and the ability to be made whole in the event of a revenue shortfall.  
• LPS has consistently advocated for and will continue to strive for necessary funding for our schools that is predictable, sustainable, and sufficient and that incorporates a realistic understanding of predictable cost increases and the need for salary and benefits increases to recruit and retain a quality educator and support workforce. 
• We look forward to engaging with policy makers during the upcoming legislative session. We are here to provide timely and accurate information and communication about LPS’s stance on proposed bills and proactively advocate for attainment of our Legislative Guidelines.
