Associate Superintendent for Civic Engagement Dr. John Neal has dedicated 43 years to serving staff, students, families and the community through his work in education. Dr. Neal has announced his retirement at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Dr. John Neal began his career with LPS in 1981 as an assistant swimming coach at Northeast High School and then also as a gifted mentor in 1982, before taking a job outside of LPS. He returned to LPS as the principal at Mickle Middle School in 2002.\u00a0<\/p>

In 2008, Dr. Neal became the district\u2019s first Director of Secondary Education where he oversaw middle and high schools and the four focus programs – Science Focus Program, Arts and Humanities Focus Program, Information and Technology Focus Program and Entrepreneurial Focus Program.<\/p>

A new position was created in 2012, and Dr. Neal was selected to serve as the Assistant to the Superintendent for Governmental Relations and General Administration. In this position, he serves as the official liaison between the school district and other government entities, including as the district\u2019s lobbyist. While the duties remained the same, Dr. Neal\u2019s title changed multiple times, the last time to Associate Superintendent for Civic Engagement in 2023.<\/p>

During his tenure at LPS, Dr. Neal assisted with the development of The Career Academy. He also collaborated with others to build the Safe and Successful Kids Interlocal agreement, and to implement the Eagle Feather Project for Native American graduating seniors. Neal oversees Athletics, Communications, Community Learning Centers, TeamMates and Wellness.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

That the Lincoln Board of Education adopt the following resolution:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

WHEREAS, Dr. John Neal has throughout his career exhibited a commitment to excellence in public education, serving as an inspiration to educators and administrators alike; and\u00a0<\/p>

WHEREAS, Dr. Neal through his tireless dedication and outstanding contributions cultivated relationships between Lincoln Public Schools and local, state and national government entities built on collaboration and transparent communication; and\u00a0<\/p>

WHEREAS, Dr. Neal worked to implement the Eagle Feather Project to increase the high school graduation rate and partner with community groups to provide academic support for LPS students; and\u00a0<\/p>

WHEREAS, Dr. Neal was instrumental in the development of community partnerships to increase opportunities for dual credit through The Career Academy; and<\/p>

WHEREAS, Dr. Neal\u2019s work in the development of the Safe and Successful Kids Interlocal Agreement addressed school safety through a proactive approach of strengthening Community Learning Centers; and<\/p>

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Lincoln Board of Education<\/p>

does hereby congratulate Dr. John Neal on a long and distinguished career and professes sincere gratitude to him for his years of service to the staff, students, families, and community of Lincoln.<\/p>
