Scholarships

The J-100

The J-100 AFJROTC Character-in-Leadership Scholarship, or The J-100 for short, provides 100 cadets a four-year scholarship with benefits including four years 100% paid tuition, in addition to university-owned/on-campus housing fees ($10,000 max per year), a book stipend, and the standard AFROTC cadet stipend.  The scholarship can be used at any AFROTC host or crosstown university.  There are no specific degree requirements, but cadets who desire to potentially enter the USSF may want to consider pursuing technical degrees. Accepting the scholarship will result in a cadet being required to enroll in AFROTC and pursue an officer commission.

Alexandria Lian Reed

Valued at $24,600 (two years) 60 hours – can be used towards an associate or bachelor’s degree): The Alexandria Lian Reed Academic Excellence Scholarship is presented to a student in the Junior Reserve Office Training Corps Program who demonstrates academic excellence and leadership qualities throughout their JROTC tenure; the student shows great potential for increased leadership roles. In addition, the individual is dedicated to continuous self-improvement, developing others, school, and community.

Cyber Academy

This is an application to award 140 Cyber Academy scholarships to eligible AFJROTC cadets to attend a virtual or in-person Cyber Academy at one of ten universities for a 6-week course in Cyber Security and IT. Eligible applicants will be selected by a quantitative board process. Participation in this program will result in college credit for those successfully completing the academic work and may provide students preparation for an opportunity to test for an industry recognized IT certification (university dependent).

Private Pilots License

The Air Force is funding scholarships for AFJROTC cadets to attend private pilot training at public/private universities. Selected cadets will be identified through a competitive boarding process. The scholarship will pay for round-trip airfare, room and board, collegiate academics, and flight hours required to potentially earn a Private Pilot’s Certificate (PPC) through an in-residence collegiate program that is approximately eight (8) weeks in length. Each university hosting students is an independent organization and provides its own management and oversight for students and programs. Cadets will be engaged in an intensive academic, flying training program and may have classes or flying training during weekend hours. Completion of the PPC is singularly dependent on each student’s academic and flying ability and the university’s determination and judgment to recommend a student.

World Food Prize

Each year JROTC cadets write a paper about global food security in class and present their papers to their classes. Those papers are reviewed by the JROTC instructors and the CASNR staff at Lincoln Northeast. The best papers are chosen to represent the program and go on to UNL where they present their papers to a panel of experts and participate in activities and hear about global challenges at the Nebraska Youth Institute. Students who participate in the Nebraska Youth Institute earn a $500 scholarship, recognition as a Borlaug Scholar, and qualify for internships and further opportunities. Scholarships can be earned cumulatively, meaning that a JROTC cadet selected all 4 years to participate could earn up $2,000 of scholarship money towards UNL.

4 Star Leadership Program

Four Star Leadership is a world-class summer leadership program that accepts 70 top high school students each year. The program provides experiences and interaction with inspirational leaders and encourages relationship building with peers. Students will participate in team-building exercises, spontaneous problem solving activities and receive coaching in persuasive speaking and writing. Students are challenged with practical leadership and ethical scenarios and will be asked to address them individually in a persuasive speech and writing competition as well as collaboratively in an ethics bowl competition with the opportunity to earn a portion of more than $30,000 in scholarships. This opportunity is valued at more than $4,000 and is free of cost for selected students, including expenses, travel and programming.
